What would your business look like if you had a Department of Impossible?
Seriously, think about it.
You have teams working on next quarter's targets. Departments optimising what already exists. Maybe you've got an innovation lab. But even they're solving problems within your current paradigm. Solve today’s known customer problems. Be faster. Build an extra gizmo.
Meanwhile, AI, science, climate and societal change are rewiring everything.
The only certainty is that whatever you come up with next will be out of date the day after.
What if you had a group whose only job was to make your current strategy look obsolete?
Da Vinci’s creating new applications. Instead of Darwins focused on being more fit.
You let them loose on your customers, your business and industry.
Like hackers and red teams that try to break software code.
Only this time with a positive twist, to come up with a new Story.
A new way for your business to be relevant in 2030 and beyond.
Sounds like science fiction?
Then, look at the automotive industry’s concept cars.
They’ll never make it into production. Yet that unconventional braking system? That battery innovation that wasn’t supposed to work? They show up in next year’s model.
- Talking to machines was once impossible
- Flying through the air was once impossible
- Printing books was once impossible
- Ploughing the land was once impossible
Until someone did it, and changed the game for everyone.
We’re currently in an Age of Transformation.
While we continue to improve what exists. We also need to build what could be.
Just one word of warning.
As I’ve experienced myself with my work in death care, customer-centricity and other industries. Once you’ve seen what could be, it’s hard to go back. Which is exactly why a lot of leaders will hesitate.
And those who don’t, create the next game.
What do you think?
If you were part of your business’ Department of Impossible, where would you look first?
